Big Game hunting in Colorado's West Elk Wilderness, drop camps and guided Mule deer and elk hunts.
The Gunnison Country Guide Service has just completed our 29th year and we are eagerly anticipating our 30th season of guiding elk and mule deer hunters, riding and packing good horses and mules, laughing and enjoying warm, comfortable cook tents, and all of the adventure that comes with wilderness horseback hunting. We also are enthusiastic about our newest venture (in its 4th season) in the West Elk Wilderness and our new name West Elk Wilderness Outfitters. We look forward once again to seeing and greeting old friends from these camps and meeting and making new friends. We hope that you can join us for a great time and to become a part of that experience.
Warmest regards, John Nelson (Outfitter Reg. #249) |

SERVICE! THAT'S OUR NAME

The Gunnison Country Guide Service is in business to serve you, your friends and family - anyone who loves wild country. We're here to help you experience and enjoy an adventure into the wilderness country that your National Forest has to offer.
Consider some of the benefits a ride with us has to offer.
- We care about the Gunnison Country. It's forests, alpine tundra, canyons, mountains, wildlife, rivers and streams. More than that, we care about people. We want you to have a safe comfortable, and enjoyable adventure in this special country.
- We are Experienced. We've been professionally leading horseback trips into the Gunnison Country since 1978. All of the different parts of your wild country experience will be handled for you - leaving you free to relax and enjoy the trip of a lifetime without worries and hassles. Your personal safety is always considered.
- We are courteous and helpful. Your guides are highly skilled, knowledgeable, and a lot of fun. You'll be treated the way we'd like to be treated in a similar situation. We're proud of the many friends we've made from our customers.
- You'll ride a better horse. Our horses are strong, powerful, experienced, mountain horses. They are well trained, well fed, well conditioned and gentle. We're proud of the quality of our horses. We'll match your mount to your ability. Over the years, we've taken hundreds of people on their first horseback ride. We've also put the most experienced of riders on a horse that they were absolutely pleased to ride.
- You'll visit the secret places which are so special to experience and so special to the character of the Gunnison Country. Are you interested in great fishing where you are the only one on the water? Perhaps you'd like to rise early to search for coyotes, elk, mule deer, bighorn sheep, mountain goats, or other abundant wildlife for which the Gunnison Country is famous. Or, maybe you'd like to explore old mine shafts and cabins abandoned by prospectors over 100 years ago, or gain insight into the mountain's history by collecting ancient sea fossils high above timberline at elevations of over 12,000 feet. You won't find this knowledge on a map, but we can take you there.
- We know the country, it's history, the wildflowers, the animals that live here, what the fish will bite on, and so many other bits of information that's been gained from precious hours spent enjoying the high country. We're eager to share it with you and to learn more about it with you.
- We've got the equipment to keep you comfortable and the means to get it into the back country. You'll eat better than you ever thought possible in the wilderness. YES, some of those cowboys can cook! They do dishes too!
- No group is too small. We handle almost any size party from 1 to over 20. We'll provide a trip just for you and your companions, or you can join others for a mixed party outing. We'll design your outing to meet your personal wishes.
