GREETING DON'S MULES They come eagerly to greet me with big eyes alert and clear. Like kids on a snowy Christmas eve when Santa Claus is near. They know that I'm bearing gifts of hay and hopefully sweet feed. But, they seem to crave attention too and affection is a need. And that brings a smile to my soul and it warms a place inside. I know that Don's mules trust me and that's a source of pride.  |
For, when growing up a young man and going through life's courses, I was told to never trust a man who dislikes dogs and horses. But, a more certain test of character at least from what I've found is the way a man's mules behave when he is not around. For if he was trusting and forgiving, his demeanor is repeated. But, those mules just won't stand for fools if they've been mistreated. So I am honored and I'm grateful for the gift that I've been given. The trust in me to keep Don's mules after he quit living. So this Christmas day I'll bring some grain and give a scratch below the ear to greet Don's mules and think of him and wish that he was here. John Nelson, Christmas 2004 Gunnison, Colorado |
| My friend and fellow outfitter, Don Steenbergen passed away in the Spring of 2004. Don had a quiet, kind, and easy way of working around horses and mules. He had a genuine affection for his animals, and they responded in kind. | |
