Several years ago we didn't even want to talk about mule deer hunting to prospective clients and certainly not about trophy bucks. But things have changed now. For the past decade Colorado has restricted all deer hunting to a drawing for licenses. The results have been remarkable. The down side to this is that it will take several preference points to draw a buck tag here. If you have preference points, the Gunnison Country is worth a look. John Nelson and Gary Ballard partnered up to form the West Elk LLC in 2004. In 2005 West Elk LLC completed the purchase of the former outfitting business and has become the designated U.S. Forest Service special use permit holder. This permit area is considered to be one of the best hunting areas in the West Elk Wilderness and is one of the few permit areas there that is accessible with abundant game herds during the late rifle seasons. We offer a top quality wilderness hunting experience from a comfortable heated tent camp. We are doing business as West Elk Wilderness Outfitters (Reg. #2411). It's called the West Elk Wilderness for a reason. The wild country is there and so are the elk. Plan to join us for a great time. |
In the 2009 season you can choose from two different Base Camps to accommodate your guided hunt. The West Elk Camp is located in game management unit 54 in the West Elk Wilderness on the Gunnison National Forest and located within designated wilderness boundaries that totally restrict the use of motorized travel and mechanized equipment. You will access this camp by riding horseback and packing your gear on the backs of horses and mules. We operate a roadhead base camp accessible by 4wd vehicle in the Fossil Ridge Recreation Management Area (Unit 55). This camp will allow for the use of 4wd vehicle as well as horses for hunting and is close to the best hunting for mule deer as well as elk. All camps feature heavy duty spacious wall tents with woodburning stoves inside for heat, sturdy cots with foam pads and a roomy cook tent where all meals are prepared and served. One guide per two hunters is provided in all camps unless upgraded.
(Unit 55) This camp is located at the end of a rough jeep road on the edge of the Fossil Ridge Wilderness. The camp is limited to a maximum of 6 to 8 hunters at any one time. This camp is packed in approximately 6 miles at an elevation of 10,200 feet. The camp is limited to 6 hunters at any one time. For experienced hunters who wish to hunt on their own, we offer fully equipped and set up drop camps. These camps are packed in approximately 3 to 7 miles and include canvas wall tents with wood burning stoves for heat and all other necessary camping and cooking gear. A rider will check your camp on a regular basis and pack out downed game from the kill site. No horses are left in camp. Your party members are the only ones sharing your camp. A minimum of two hunters is required. We recommend these camps only for hunters familiar with back country camping and mountain hunting conditions, and who are in good physical condition.Price: Four or more hunters/ $1600.00 per person, Three hunters / $1650.00 per person, Two Hunters/ $1700.00 per person for up to 7 hunting days plus pack in and pack out days. You may pack in one or two days prior to the opening date of the season. Food package: $200.00 per person additional 
Our campsites are on the Gunnison National Forest, located north and east of Gunnison at an elevation near 10,500 feet. We are in game management unit #55. Gunnison sets at an elevation of 7,700 feet. 
We skin, quarter, and wrap your game in cloth game bags, and we will deliver it to your vehicle or to one of the two game processing plants in Gunnison if you wish. Dry ice and packing boxes or complete processing services can be purchased there. We have some very good taxidermists in Gunnison if you choose to have your trophy mounted here. If you prefer to take your trophy home to be mounted, we will deliver the head to a local taxidermist to be professionally caped and prepared for travel in time for your departure. The cost of this service is usually about $50.00. Pack out of your game in included in the price of the hunts, and there are no hidden charges. You may arrive in camp one or two days before your hunt begins and depart on the day after your hunt ends at no additional charge. The Gunnison Country Guide Service, John Nelson is licensed by the State of Colorado, Reg.#249, permitted by the U.S. Forest Service, bonded, insured, and Red Cross qualified in first aid. We are a member of the Colorado Outfitters Association and Rocky Mtn. Elk Foundation, and on the list of recommended outfitters of the North American Hunting Club. We have been in business since 1978, and 2009 will be our 32nd season of guiding hunters in the Gunnison Country. |
